Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Is Adkins Pet Center accepting new pets?

No, our facility is currently unable to accept new pets. If you need to find a new home for your pet, a listing of other shelters that may be accepting pets is available here. For helpful tips on finding a new home for your pet, click here.

Q. How do I adopt a pet from Adkins Pet Center?

Adoption applications are available on our website. Please complete an application and return it to us via email or fax. After the application has been reviewed, one of our employees will contact you to schedule a Meet-n-Greet between you and several of our pets.

Q. Do you allow your pets to be adopted by people living out-of-state?

Yes, out-of-state adoptions are possible. An adoption application is required and must be approved before any visit to our facility will be scheduled. The adoption is still subject to denial, pending an in-person visit. All transportation arrangements and costs must be handled by the potential adopter as we do not ship our pets. As per our adoption contract, if at any time you need to relinquish the pet, he/she MUST be returned to Adkins Pet Center, regardless of where you are living.

Q. When can I drop by to see what pets you have available?

We are not currently able to accommodate unscheduled visits to our facility. A current listing of our pets, including pictures and descriptions, is available on PetFinder.com. If you are interested in adopting one of our wonderful pets, please complete and return an adoption application to us.

Q. What is included in the adoption fee?

Adoption fees range from $100-$200/dog and $50-$100/cat. All pets adopted from Adkins Pet Center are spayed/neutered and current on all appropriate vaccinations. Dogs are also microchipped.

Q. If the pet I adopt from Adkins Pet Center is too young to be spayed/ neutered, is the surgery still included in the adoption fee?

Yes. If you adopt a pet who is too young to be spayed/neutered and/or receive all necessary vaccinations, you will receive a voucher to cover those costs. The voucher will be honored at Animal Hospital of Cornelius, Lincolnton Animal Hospital and Ironton Animal Hospital.

Q. Do you offer vaccines, microchipping, spay/neuter procedures to the public?

At this time we do not offer any veterinary services to the public.

Q. Do you offer grooming, boarding, training services?

Our facility offers full service grooming and boarding services. Additional info about both services is available on our website. We do not currently offer pet training services to the public.

Q. Do you sell pet supplies?

Yes, we sell a variety of pet toys, grooming supplies, leashes/collars, etc.

Q. What types of pets do you have available for adoption? Where do your pets come from?

We have a large selection of dogs and cats. They cover a wide range of age, breed, temperament, size, etc. A complete listing of our pets, including pictures and descriptions, is available on PetFinder.com. Our dogs and cats come to us from a variety of places and situations. Some of our pets were rescued just moments from being euthanized at local animal shelters and some were relinquished to us from guardians who are no longer able to care for them.

Q. Are your dogs house trained? Leash trained?

We work with all of our pets to help prepare them for situations they’ll encounter after being adopted; however since a kennel environment is so different from a typical home environment, we're unable to guarantee that your new pet will be fully trained. Please be patient with your new pet and allow them time to adjust.

Q. What types of donations would benefit your facility? Are donations tax deductible?

With so many pets to care for, we're often in need of supplies. We greatly appreciate donations of: old quilts and blankets to make beds for our dogs, towels and shampoo for our grooming services, "poop pick-up" bags, veterinary medicines and supplies, pet carriers, hand soap, dish soap, bleach, Clorox Clean-Up, Tide HE, paper towels, toilet paper, etc. We are a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization; donations made to us are tax deductible.

Q. Can I volunteer with Adkins Pet Center?

Yes! Volunteers are always needed. Applications are available on our website. Please complete an application and return it to us via email or fax. One of our employees will contact you about the different volunteer opportunities currently available.
